As SSD's finally come down in price, you're also starting to see it greatly increase in storage capacity. I remember the days when SSD's capped out at just 256GB,now you can purchase that same SSD for $79.99 on Amazon. Tech trend bucking, nowadays we're witnessing SSD's breaking the 1TB storage capacity.
Samsung which in my opinion manufactures some of the best SSDs around are going far and beyond by releasing a beefy 15.36 TB solid state drive, making it the worlds largest SSD a title once held by Fixstar. Samsung Electronics have announced shipping availability of SAS-enabled (Serial Attached SCSI) PM 1633a solid state drive.
This SSD is definitely not for the casual system builder, this storage drive benefits data storage managers, digital archivist, and CGI studios looking for maximum density per cubic inch. The entire interface offers up 12Gbps of bandwidth, it has a 1.2GB/sec read/write throughput, 200,000 read IOPs and 32,000 respectively.
In examining the specs even further, Samsung' PM1633a technology is enabled by combining 512 of Samsung's own 256Gb-V-NAND memory chips. The 256Gb dies are nicely stacked in 16-layers to form one single 512GB package, with a total of 32 NAND flash packages within the 15.36GB storage drive.
Employed from Samsung is 16GB of on-board DRAM, there's a custom controller and special firmware within the PM1633a, this particular feature accesses large amounts of Flash NAND and offers full complete drive write day (DWPD) or 15.36TB of writes and up to 10 times the endurance of standard MLC SSD. There's also data protection employed by PM1633a technology in the event of any type of power failure, this is critical feature needed in any enterprising SSD.
Samsung's 15.36TB solid state drive will not be only storage drive employed with the PM1633a SAS technology, the lineup will include 2.5-inch version of 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, and 480GB.
To sum it all up, you have solid state drive that has a massive amount of storage, with some pretty impressive technology. There is no confirmation from Samsung on price point and shipping date.
Key Technology you should know 3D V-NAND: Its Samsung's own technology which basically is a SSD that has flash cells stacked vertically in 3 Dimensional.
