Here's How to Properly Clean Your Gaming Monitor
The gaming monitor is not just a display connected to a graphics port — it's a portal to immersive and competitive gaming, as well as a platform for creative expression. Whether you're gaming in high-refresh-rate FPS games or editing pixel-perfect projects, a clean monitor will ensure clarity, comfort, and longevity. But improper cleaning can lead to permanent scratches, streaks, or even damage to sensitive components. In this post, I'll show you how to clean your monitor correctly.
First Step: Power Down and Unplug
Before you begin the cleaning process, please turn off your monitor and unplug it from the power source. Not only is this safety precaution necessary, but smudges and dust are also more visible on a dark display. In addition, it prevents static buildup, which can attract even more dust.
Second Step: Make Sure you choose the Right Materials
Avoid using paper towels, old cloths such as T-shirts, or abrasive cloths. Instead, you opt for the following: Microfiber cloth material is very soft, lint-free, and designed specifically for delicate surfaces. Instead of using Tap Water, opt for distilled water. Tap water will often leave mineral spots on your display. Isopropyl alcohol ( 70%or less) is an optional solvent for tougher grime. Warning! Do not use ammonia-based cleaners, as they can damage the protective anti-glare coating on the display, potentially leading to permanent cloudiness, streaks, and physical damage. The spray bottle can be used to mist your cloth lightly, not the screen.
Warning!! Never spray directly onto the monitor. Liquid can seep into the edges and damage internal components.
Third Step: Wipe Gently, with less aggression
Lightly dampen your microfiber cloth with distilled water or a 50/50 mix of water and isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe in circular motion or horizontal strokes. Importantly, apply minimal pressure.
Focus primarily on the visible smudges, fingerprints, and dust accumulation — especially around the edges and bezel of the monitor.
If you have a monitor with an anti-glare or matte coating, then you need to be extra gentle. Any harsh rubbing can wear down the protective layer over time.
Fourth Step: Clean your Frame and Ports
Use a dry (Microfiber) or slightly damp cloth to clean the monitor's plastic frame around the HDMI ports. Compressed air should be used to blow out dust accumulation from the HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C connector ports. Warning!!! Please avoid using any metal objects, as they can bend or scratch the contact pins.
Fifth Step: Let Your Monitor Dry, then Power On
After you're done cleaning, give your monitor at least 5-10 minutes to air dry. If you applied moisture, ensure that the area, especially the edges, is dry before plugging it into the outlet.

Make this a monthly task; regular maintenance will prevent dust buildup. Avoid placing your monitor in direct sunlight. It could degrade the screen's protective coating. If needed, use a screen protector or hood. Especially if you're like me and eat or drink near your computer setup.
