Under The Knife : Seagate Momentus XT 750GB

Today's segment of "Under The Knife" we look at the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB hybrid hard drive.As you well know or if you don't know by now hybrid drives are starting to make gains in the market place and rightfully so,hybrid drives are a  unique piece of storage technology,it combines the hard disk along with the SSD (solid state drive),the hard disk is strictly used for storage,while the SSD on the other hand is used for caching.Hard drives in general have always used this type of technology but the caching capacity on traditional hard drives are on a much smaller scale.

The benefits of using hybrid drives,especially hybrid drives that  uses NAND technology are,unlike traditional hard drives where you're using the hard disk to read and write data,hybrid drives are reading and writing data from solid state memory (or SSD) which makes for faster data transfer,this means there are no spinning platters,with the motor at rest the hard drive is not consuming any power or generating any heat,other benefiting factors are much faster boot times.

Let's put this hybrid hard drive under the knife and dissect this technology:

Size of the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB: 2.5 inch

The disk portion of the Seagate Momentus XT comes in at a 750 GB storage capacity.This is where the data is stored,but unlike traditional hard drives there's no read/write activity on this storage drive.The data is read off the disk and transfer to the NAND cache.

 NAND cache
There is 8GB's of NAND caching,the focal point of this hybrid drive technology.This is where the bulk of the operation takes place,the reading/writing of data.The onboard controller performs the entire caching computation without the use of the CPU.

Seagate Adaptive Memory
The adaptive memory technology is a self learning algorithm that's design to deliver SSD-like response to your favorite applications and files.Adaptive Memory selectively copies data that is frequently read,its retrieved into flash,giving the user an instant-response experience

FAST Factor Technology
What FAST Factor boot does it gives the laptop user instant response that's needed to get things moving in a rapid fashion.The boot time is nearly as fast as an SSD,the Seagate Momentus XT drive with FAST Factor boots up 3 times faster than a traditional 5400RPM drive that's within a laptop.
