Apple? We have an iPhone Duo Display Issue

Just days after Apple launched its first foldable smartphone, display failures on the iPhone Duo's inner screen are already emerging across global social media. Affected users report identical symptoms: vertical cracks forming along the crease, along with dead pixels or bright white banding, usually within 24 to 48 hours of first use.

The Screen Issue Explained

Some early consumers are experiencing the defect described and a distinct popping sound or physical resistance when opening and closing the Duo, followed by an immediate visible fracture down the inner folding panel. In severe cases, the crack penetrates the ultrathin glass layer, causing the digitizer and AMOLED matrix underneath to fail entirely on one side.

What Exactly Does The Teardown Reveal

Published reports of hardware teardowns and CT scans from various repair analysts, notably iFixit, have attributed the display issue to a mechanical clearance defect inside the hinge assembly.

The hinge uses internal retracting support bars that are designed to drop out of the way when the device is folded. In some defective units, the center bar appears to stick or fail to retract fully, resulting in a localized pressure hotspot against the back of the panel. The failures are clustered tightly around the lower hinge zone, directly around the internal ribbon cable route past the moving mechanical components.

So what we have here is the Debris vs. Mechanics. Meaning, while particle ingestion can cause a grinding noise along the hinge gears over time, early post-purchase cracking appears to be driven by component interference rather than external debris.

So What's Next, Apple?

An issue of this magnitude will warrant a quick response from Apple, which it has already acknowledged. They said the problem affects a "small number of iPhone Duo units." Currently, Apple is actively directing affected consumers to AppleCare for free direct unit replacements, covering the damage under its one-year standard limited manufacturing warranty without requiring an active AppleCare+ tier. Be mindful that, due to limited launch stock, some users will face backorder delays for swap units.
