Here's Everything You Need to Know About Block's Next-gen BitKey Wallet and Its Functionality

Block, the company behind its well-known and widely used financial apps (Cash App, Square, and AfterPay), has just launched the next-generation BitKey Wallet. Launched in 2024, the new version adds a physical display, new features, and a new design.

Here is everything you need to know about the new BitKey device and how it works, as I may purchase it in the near future.

What is the Core Concept of 2-of-3 Multisig?

Bitkey is designed specifically for "self-custody without the use of a seed phrase." Instead of users having to tediously write down a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase, security is split across three keys. To move assets, users need two of the following three: the App Key stored on your smartphone (secured by biometrics). Stored on the physical BitKey device is the Hardware Key. Then there is the Server Key: your data is stored by Block (I assume on their server), for recovery and daily spending limits.

You might be asking, " Why does it all matter? If users misplace their smartphones, they can still access their assets from their BitKey device and from Block's server. Or, if you misplace the Bitkey Wallet entirely, you can rely on the smartphone and the server. Block alone can't move your money because they hold only one key.

BitKey Hardware and Design

The core feature of the BitKey Wallet is the new touchscreen fingerprint display. This significant upgrade will benefit security-conscious users by allowing verification of any receiving address directly on the device, and preventing "man-in-the-middle" compromised attacks. In contrast, your smartphone may display a fake address.

When it comes to connectivity and design, the BitKey Wallet features an NFC chip and a USB-C port. The BitKey still retains its Hexagonal shape; however, the rear portion of the device is not stainless steel, unlike the previous generation device.

The Crucial Features and Ecosystem

There are several crucial features of the BitKey Wallet that you need to pay very close attention to; they are literally the driving force behind this device. For starters, there is what I call the No Seed Phrases feature. Let me explain. Users will never have to write down passwords on paper, which they can easily lose. Recovery is handled through cloud backups ( Google Drive, OneDrive) and "Recovery Contacts."

The Inheritance Feature, launched on the first Gen BitKey in 2025, allows users to designate a beneficiary who can, with precaution, claim their Bitcoin after a period of inactivity without granting immediate access while the user is alive.

The Proof of Reserve feature, recently launched by Block as an on-chain signature, allows you to verify that the Bitcoin you see in the app is actually held in reserve. Users of the BitKey/Square ecosystem can now earn 5% back at any participating Square merchants near you.

The Recovery in Case you Lose it all

Just in case you lose your smartphone and BitKey Wallet, Block solves the *lost both" through a series of Recovery Contacts. During setup, users can choose trusted friends and family members who, by the way, won't see your balance or keys. If users lose their device, they can use their BitKey app to verify their identity, which triggers a social recovery process to restore the App Key from cloud backup.

Then there are the Limitations.

Although BiyKey Wallet offers unique features, there are several limitations. Firstly, BitKey can only be used for Bitcoins. It does not support Ethereum, Solana, or any other “altcoins.” The device can only be used with mobile devices, designed specifically for iOS and Android. And probably the most significant drawback of them all is that, as of early 2026, the device remains focused on on-chain Bitcoin storage rather than instant Lightning payments.

My Final Thoughts…

If you’re a Bitcoin holder who wants the security of cold storage but is afraid of losing a seed phrase, BitKey is probably the best user-friendly option on the market.
