Here's Everything I've Learned About Apple's First Foldable, iPhone Duo
So, Apple has finally entered the foldable market with the iPhone Duo. At its annual Fall event (streamed online, by the way), the company out of Cupertino unveiled a book-style hybrid device that combines a smartphone with an iPad-style canvas. There is a lot to unpack here; let's get to it.
Here is everything I’ve learned about Apple's very first foldable, the iPhone Duo.
First Up: the Design and Display
Let's talk about the iPhone Duo's design, because it's what's grabbed everyone's attention. Once unfolded, the Duo becomes Apple's thinnest iPhone ever, with a machined titanium frame, Ceramic Shield on the back, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. It has a full IP68 P68 water and dust resistance rating.
The Duo display features a 5.4-inch outer cover screen that opens to a 7.6-inch display. The entire interior panel uses an anti-reflective matte Nano texture that is designed to minimize crease visibility and screen glare. Both screens will gain support for Apple Pencil later this year.
The hinge is the key display component that makes the crease nearly invisible. It's powered by a custom assembly of more than 100 precision components; the hinge can lock inplace at 180 degrees while supporting multi-angle tabletop and tent modes.
The Hardware Architecture and Performance
The iPhone Duo runs on the 2nm A20 Pro SoC, which Apple says delivers up to 35% higher sustained performance than the previous-gen chips.
On the networking front, Apple debuts its in-house component, the C2 cellular modem, which boosts 5G speeds by up to 50% while consuming 15% less power. Like the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series, the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide.
There is slight change in the authentication setup. Apple has shift away from Face ID to Touch ID integrated into the side of the power button to accommodate the ultra-thin display bezel.
The Camera and Software Experience
For image capturing, the iPhone Duo camera array features a 48MP Fusion wide-angle camera and a 48MP ultra-wide sensor in the camera plateau, supporting 4K 120 fps video and Dolby Vision time-lapse. The front-facing camera includes a 12MP Center Stage and under-display sensor on the interior screen, enabling simultaneous Dual Capture during FaceTime use.
In viewing the Foldable iOS interface, you can noticeably see the dynamic shift toward the outer edge for thumb reach; apps run side by side or launch in duplicate instances, and content automatically migrates away from the hinge.
Even though the iPhone Duo is late to the foldable market, Apple has deliberately played the long game. Rather than rushing to be the proverbial "first," they address the category's biggest compromise: the noticeable crease. By delivering an ultra-thin titanium foldable smartphone, an IP68-rated design build, and a nano-textured inner display engineered to eliminate the "crease virtually," the hardware should feel less like an experiment and more like a true iPad-iPhone hybrid.
