Hardware Pick of The Week: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-core, 16 Thread Processor

The AMD Ryzen 9800X3D has secured its spot as my " hardware pick of the week" (or maybe the year, according to many publications). This particular processor represents the pinnacle of gaming efficiency and value, even with the upcoming refresh chips entering the market this month. While many enthusiasts have their eyes set on the newly released 9850X3D, the 9800X3D remains the obvious choice for several reasons I've listed in this post.

The Value is Certainly The Sweet Spot

As of mid-April 2026, the 9800XD has seen significant price stabilization. While the launch price point was $479, the processor has consistently sold for $419-$429 (even lower on Amazon). In contrast, the 98503DX variant retails for $499+, with a marginal 3-5% performance gain. For users focused on price-to-performance metrics, the 9800X3D is a clear economic winner.

Gaming Supremacy Through the 2nd Gen 3D V-Cache

The 96MB of L3 cache memory is the pinnacle component of the processor. With gaming titles such as Battlefield 6 and STALKER 2, reports indicate that the 9800X3D still outperforms Intel's current flagship, the Core Ultra 9 285K, by roughly 30-35% in gaming, thanks in part to its L3 cache. The processor maintained high framerates at 1%. Speaking of graphical performance, there is zero microstutter during essential competitive gaming at 1440p. The RTX 5080 or 5090 GPU performs at its peak when paired with the 9800X3D processor, without the bottlenecks.

The Thermal and Power Efficiency

Unlike the 9850X3D, which pushes high clock speeds (up to 5.6 GHz) at the cost of high power consumption and heat buildup, the 9800X3D doesn't consume an excessive amount of power. Even during intense gaming, the processor's TDP is only 120W or less. The 9800XD performs exceptionally well with a standard dual-tower air cooler, which can save money compared to pricey AIO liquid cool setups.

The AM5 Platform has Grown Up.

Currently, the AM5 has evolved into a fully mature platform. With high-speed DDR5-6000 memory prices declining (as noted in my recent posts), building a system around this processor will be more affordable than ever. In addition, the socket is expected to support at least the next-generation processor, offering users an easy path to upgrading.

The Spec Sheet

  • Cores/Threads:  8/16

  • Boost Clock:  Up to 5.2GHz

  • L3 Cache:  96 MB (3D V-Cache)

  • Socket: AM5

  • Function Best with: High- refresh rate 1080p/1440p gaming

My Final Thoughts

If you're currently building a system and want the best hardware that money can buy, without paying the early-adopter tax on the 9850X, then the 9800X3D is the clear choice in this mid-April market.
